Hob Knobbing

The back hallway of our house has six doors: They lead to the garage, a bathroom, the kitchen, a closet, the basement, and to the main hallway to the rest of the house. When all the doors are closed, it’s difficult to know what leads to what.  Obviously, we’ve got it down.  But visitors often experience  “The Lady or the Tiger?’ dilemma.

Will they turn the knob to find the kitchen and a midnight snack? Or will they open a door only to discover a rack of rather sad jackets and abandoned soccer cleats?

Labeling each door would be too tacky. But I have this fantasy of getting a different doorknob for each door, a knob shape that would signal what was behind the door.  Think of them as “The Doors (Knob) of Perception.” Yes, that too would be tacky in real life but, in theory, it sounds charmingly eccentric.

So here are some fantasy knobs:

Door knob to the (slightly creepy) baby’s room, natch. From decorativehardware.com

Soccer ball shaped knobs from Pottery Barn Kids for closet crammed full of old cleats.

The yin yang door knob by Century Hardware leads to the meditation room.

Ornate flora door knob from Rejuvenation could lead to the green house. If I had one.

OK, so technically, a door knocker this is just too perfect for the tack room, from Hippo Hardware.
