Home Away From Home With Meredith Lodging: South Beach

The night before leaving for our latest coastal getaway, my husband and I spent our evening looking at photos of A-frame homes. As we learned more about them, we quickly fell in love with A-frame living for both the structures themselves and the lifestyle. We arrived in South Beach, Oregon, brimming with excitement for our weekend away.

This edition of Home Away From Home With Meredith Lodging takes place at a home called “Holiday House” in South Beach. Luxurious, comfortable and steps from the beach, the home is situated in a prime exploration zone between Newport and Waldport and just 15 minutes north of Yachats.

Travel Tips

  1. Brew-tiful mornings. The hot tub (with an ocean view) was the perfect spot to start each day. We enjoyed our morning dip with a delicious local roast from Left Coast Coffee Roasters.
  2. Ride and seek. This home’s location is perfectly located for day trips. Take a drive along scenic Highway 101. Visit incredible viewpoints with sweeping ocean views, historic lighthouses and golden-sand beaches along the way.
  3. Shrimp-ly the best. The South Beach food scene is fantastic. We visited Local Ocean in Newport specifically for the moqueca de peixe (Brazilian stew). It was phenomenal. Yachats Brewing was also a favorite for burgers and local beer.
  4. It’s a framer. If you’re lucky enough to stay in an A-frame, embrace the lifestyle. Life in an A-frame like Holiday House feels simple, cozy, relaxing and cool.
  5. Locally inspired. Pick up a loaf from Bread & Roses Bakery as a base for crab dip in a bread bowl.

Recipe – Smoked Crab Dip

Ingredients:

  • 1 shallot, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 t liquid smoke
  • 1 T extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 C mayonnaise
  • 3/4 C sour cream
  • 1/2 t Dijon mustard
  • 2 t Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 t lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 C shredded parmesan cheese
  • Salt & pepper
  • 1 large loaf of fresh bread
  • 1 lb. lump crab meat (we picked ours up at Barnacle Bills)
  • 1 jalapeño (optional)

Preparation:

Sautee shallots, garlic, and liquid smoke in olive oil in skillet until shallots are translucent. Pour into bowl and add crab, mayonnaise, sour cream, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and lemon juice, and carefully fold together to keep the crab from breaking apart. Add in half of the shredded parmesan and continue to fold. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Carefully cut the top off of your loaf and set aside. Remove much of the bread on the inside and set aside. The “filling” is great for croutons or breadcrumbs!

Pour crab mixture into the bread bowl you’ve made and top with the remaining shredded parmesan.

Bake at 385 degrees for 35 minutes or until the cheese is browned and bubbly. Serve with crackers and veggies. Enjoy!
