Structure + Style 2017: Remodel Winners

Here are the winners of the 2017 Structure + Style Awards: Remodel!

KITCHEN REMODEL – UNDER $75,000

This historic remodel in the Overlook neighborhood provides modern conveniences while staying true to the architectural character and Art Deco style of the home. We identified a layout that would maximize storage and functionality while keeping within the existing footprint by opening the kitchen to the breakfast nook. In the remodel, an original leaded glass door from a built-in was salvaged and reworked into a new cabinet. Cabinet hardware and light fixtures add an Art Deco flare to the room, and a pop of color was incorporated with handcrafted Celadon subway tiles.

KITCHEN REMODEL – OVER $75,000

Inspiration for the kitchen color came from chicken eggs, the perfect softened tone for this colorful home. Products and materials selected were a blend of period-appropriate, practical and forgiving, and supportive of local businesses. The locally made cabinets feature obscure glass details, spice drawers and a toe-kick step stool to access the high storage.  Authentic, honed Carrara marble countertops were a “must have” for the owners and fit the period style perfectly. Period-appropriate lighting and push-button wall switches round out the attention to detail in this charming new kitchen.

MAJOR HOME REMODEL – $250,000 – $400,000

Looking to expand their one-story 1980s SE Portland house without taking up extra yard space, this home was transformed into a two-story spacious minimalist retreat with streamlined features and surprises around every corner — a secret bookshelf closet, remote-controlled, full-spectrum under cabinet bathroom lighting and a metal railing detail.

MAJOR HOME REMODEL – OVER $400,000

Originally designed and built in 1926 by architect Robert B. Beat, this 5,000-square-foot estate in historic Irvington is an exceptionally attentive, custom rebuild of this historic home after fire damage. It harmonizes its original Mediterranean character with a clean, fresh aesthetic in concert with modern function and space-planning. Using historically accurate materials, including leaded glass windows and custom millwork to recreate the original styles, this remodel focused on restoring the gracious home to its former splendor.

BATHROOM REMODEL – $25,000 – $50,000

This crisp bathroom packed with storage was previously a dark downstairs closet off a guest bedroom. Now guests can enjoy the convenience of an in-suite bathroom that is both functional and aesthetically appointed. This closet conversion was like playing a game of Tetris. Our goal was to accommodate for as much storage as possible within a small space while also aiming to make the bathroom feel larger. Our in-house cabinetry shop meticulously cut and installed the vanity and mirrors and flush-set cabinets built within the wall behind the toilet. The cabinets had to be installed around the home’s foundation, as this space is within the basement. Large gray floor tiles anchor the space and tie it in with the gray quartz countertops.

BATHROOM REMODEL – $25,000 – $50,000

The master bathroom of this 1984 home needed to better utilize the large space and expand the walk-in closet. A sleek, freestanding soaking tub shines center stage as a contemporary, chrome pendant hangs above. Built-in, glass-paneled, linen cabinets with decorative furniture feet elevate the look. French-panel wainscoting adds dimension to break up the vast area behind the tub while a subtle wallpaper adds texture. Heated floors warm up the tile floors. Because the room is so large, the scale and features were important to create a focal point, increase storage options, enhance the look and feel of the space and create balance.
