Empty Nesters get the Kitchen they Deserve

When a Portland couple became fed up with their inefficient kitchen, they decided it deserved an update. With the help of Erin Davis, lead designer and co-owner of Mosaik Design & Remodeling, their outdated kitchen was transformed into a productive, two-cook space that is well-suited to accommodate their guests.

Residing in the heart of the Irvington neighborhood, the pair of empty nesters love to cook and entertain, but found that their old kitchen made both activities strenuous. Having been remodeled 20 years ago, the existing kitchen had begun to show wear and tear. The kitchen was disjointed and cramped, the materials used in the remodel didn’t reflect the true period of the home, and the space possessed little storage space.

To meet the needs of the couple Mosaik Design & Remodeling begun by removing the existing chimney and back storage area. With that additional space, they were able to add an island housing a second oven, a pantry, larger walkways, and additional cabinets for storage.

The marble island top is a hand selected Calacatta marble slab, which is carried through in a mosaic behind the stovetop’s range, while the countertops are bulletproof Ceasarstone. The cabinetry used is an inset door style which emulates a vintage feel while the glass doored cabinetry above allows the homeowners to display their glass vase and bowl collection.

In keeping with the Portland theme, Mosaik chose Rejuvenation Lighting for the fixtures which add a modern touch to the kitchen without being overwhelming while Pratt & Larson subway tile was used for the backsplash adding a lived-in and period touch. The Rohl pull-out faucet, Shaw’s apron sink and bin pulls, and the new white oak hardwoods add the finishing touches to the kitchen.
